Qin grew up amid the devastation and scarcity of the “Culture Revolution” in China, a witness to resilience and ingenuity on a national scale since 1978. His parents were both teachers, and brought their own energy and excitement for reading to him.

After receiving B.A. (English) from Yangzhou Normal College (now part of Yangzhou University), and M.A. (Comparative Literature and World Literature) from Central China Normal University, Qin earned his Ph.D. in Literary Theory and Criticism from Yangzhou University. Funded by the provincial government scholarships, he studied at Exeter College, University of Oxford in 2002, and worked with Professor Charles Ross, chair of comparative literature program at Purdue University from 2007 to 2008. Since joining the faculty at Yangzhou University in 1986, he has studied literary theory, literary criticism, and comparative literature, with a special focus on a study of works written by, for, and about the Yale critics in a variety of social and cultural contexts. In his book, The Deconstructive Criticism of J. Hillis Miller (2011), he explored the format of a deconstructive miscellany to reveal surprising connections between the rhetoric reading and the cultural politics.

Qin’s interests include theory’s new directions and new modes of “hybrid” criticism in the 21st century; influential figures stressing topics with a newly attuned attention to political and ethical questions.

Professor Qin served as director of the Division of International Cooperation and Exchanges of Yangzhou University from 2016 to 2022. He was appointed to the University Council and served as member in 6-year terms (2016 to 2022). As director, he facilitated strategic planning and initiatives, including enhancing international collaboration for the academic and student communities; creating global university cooperation alliances; amplifying partnerships in Europe, South America, and other parts of the world; delivering joint and dual degree programs drawing on the excellence of our sister universities in the U.S., Germany, Australia and Ireland.

Other leadership roles at Yangzhou University have included serving as dean of the College of International Studies (2013 to 2016); associate dean of the College of International Studies (2004 to 2013).

Except for appointments to administrative positions, Professor Qin held secondary faculty appointments, including teaching and mentoring scores of graduate students. He has received grants from National Social Science Foundation and Provincial Social Science Foundation, and the project for humanities and social sciences from the Ministry of Education. He won four prizes for Teaching Excellence and Distinguished Scholarship at provincial and ministerial levels.

Professor Qin currently serves as Vice Chairman of Comparative Literature Association of Jiangsu Province; Executive Member of the Committee of Foreign Literature, China Association of Higher Education (CAHE); Council Member of China Association for the Study of American Literature (CASAL); Executive Member of Foreign Literature Association of Jiangsu Province, and Executive Member of Translators Association of Jiangsu Province. He has been selected as a training candidate for "Talent Project" at Yangzhou University.
